Using a casual, “off-hand” tone of voice, you could say something like,
“Hi Steve, this is Sara. I just wanted to let you know I appreciate what you did for me and I’d like to thank you personally, so give me a call when you have a chance.”
How could Steve resist that combination of arousing his curiosity, “I wonder what I did?” with self-interest (“thanks” can be many things).
Another very important factor is that this is a positive message ABOUT THEM and not about you!
Before you make this type of call, you have to be prepared. This means you have to find something the other person did that you really do appreciate. It can be a small thing, but it has to be real. If you don’t sincerely appreciate what you talk about, it will show and you’ll come off as fake and just make things worse.
